The New Kensington Chapter and Vandergrift Chapter of the American Red Cross received their
charters in 1917 and operated as individual units until their merger in March of 1990. The two
Chapters merged to form the New Kensington - Vandergrift Unit. This merger was created to
enable the Unit to best meet the needs and to provide the best service to the twelve
communities located in their jurisdiction.
In October of 2002 the Chapter once again made a change to be able to continue to serve the
people living in their communities. The Unit became a Certified Service Delivery Unit of the
Chestnut Ridge Chapter, headquartered in Latrobe, PA. This enabled the New Kensington -
Vandergrift Unit to maintain a satellite office at 1821 5th Avenue in Arnold.
In January of 2008, the Chestnut Ridge Chapter officially merged with the New
Kensington-Vandergrift Unit creating a unified chapter that will be able to better the meet the
needs of the communities.
The staff along with volunteers provide a variety of services to the communities in our
jurisdiction. We are not a government agency and do not receive funding for local programs or
services. 100% of our funding is received from the American Public as well as financial support
from local businesses, community partners and the United Way.
