GBC Shredmaster GEX106 Jam Free Cross Cut Paper Shredder Review

January 11th, 2011

There are many personal shredders on the market today. But one to stop and take note of is the GBC Shredmaster GEX106 Jam Free Cross Cut Paper Shredder. Designed for light duty use in a small or home office, this machine offers powerful performance in a compact package. Automatic features and jam free technology provide simple, easy use. Here is a closer look at the strengths and weaknesses of the GEX106.

Strengths:

  • The petite dimensions of this device allow it to be tidily stored under a desk or table for easy access right when you need it. And since it only weighs about 25 pounds, moving it around shouldn’t be much of a hassle.
  • An automatic on and off mechanism allows you to use this machine one handed. Items are detected when inserted and activate the blades to begin shredding. Once everything is through, the device turns the blades off to avoid unnecessary wear and tear on the cutting shafts and motor.
  • Intuitive Jam Free technology senses when too much paper is in the feed. The throat will glow red to warn the user. Simply remove the excess and the machine will begin shredding again. If paper does get clogged in the blades, the automatic reverse function will feed the items back out to the user.
  • Up to ten stapled or paperclipped sheets can enter the nine inch wide paper entry. Items are shred as fast as 6.5 feet per minute. The blades can even destroy CDs and DVDs.
  • The cross cutting mechanism tears full size documents into tiny pieces virtually impossible to reassemble, providing a level three security rating. This keeps safe confidential materials with social security numbers, employee identities and strategic information.
  • Paper confetti drops into a six gallon waste bin. The container easily pulls out for simple removal and replacement of the shred bag.
  • GBC provides a two year limited warranty on this product. The cutters are covered by a 20 year limited warranty.

Weaknesses:

  • The shreds created only provide a level three security rating. For all-purpose office shredding, this keeps safe generic and confidential material. But businesses required to meet NSA guidelines for document destruction will need a higher security device, which GBC also makes.
  • As with many deskside shredders, this one is not rated for continuous run. After about four minutes of constant use, the thermal cut-off will kick in and power down your machine for a 30 minute cool down period. For light duty use, you may not ever run into this. Offices looking for a shared shredder between more than four users may prefer a device with a more powerful motor rather than be constantly idly waiting for the shredder to be ready.

Overall, the GBC Shredmaster GEX106 is an excellent personal shredder. The many automatic features offer ease of use and convenience. Cross cutting blades keep your confidential information safe and secure. And quality craftsmanship is guaranteed by a 20 year warranty. We think the GEX106 is a great choice for your next deskside shredder.

GBC Shredmaster GLX1942 JamStopper Cross Cut Paper Shredder Review

January 10th, 2011

Centralized office shredders are seen in many businesses nowadays. But how often have you waited in line to shred, only to find a jam or the machine cooling off? Those days are over with the GBC Shredmaster GLX1942 JamStopper Cross Cut Paper Shredder. Outfitted with automatic features for simple operation, this device also works to prevent jams and allows continuous all day use. Keep reading for more details.

Strengths:

  • Automatic features make this shredder easy to use. The on/off senses paper in the feed and begins shredding when needed. Once everything is through, the blades automatically shut off. Two minutes of no use will trigger the motor to power down to a sleep mode to conserve energy. During peak use, the motor is built to run continuously without needing a cool down.
  • JamStopper technology aids in the prevention of paper jams. Overfed paper in the feed causes the motor to turn off and the throat to glow red. Simply remove excess items until the light turns green, then continue shredding as before. If a jam happens, the automatic reverse spits out clogged paper to clear the blades.
  • A wide 16 inch paper entry accepts up to 19 sheets of oversized documents and cluttered stacks. This can included stapled and paperclipped items, credit cards, CDs, and DVDs. Materials are digested as fast as 42 feet per minute, an excellent rate for a cross cutting device. The pieces that remain are only 5/32″ x 1-1/2″ and earn a level three security rating. Generic office shredding as well as confidential business and personal information stays safe at this level.
  • The remnants rain down into a large 42 gallon waste bin. The container is located in a pull-out drawer for easier removal and replacement of the shred bags.
  • GBC offers one of the best warranties in the business. This specific model carries a two year warranty, which includes parts, labor, and even on-site service. The blades themselves are covered by a lifetime warranty.

Weaknesses:

  • Weighing in at 118 pounds, this is one heavy piece of machinery. Even so, there are casters on the bottom for added mobility, allowing the device to be rolled to different locations. We think that most users won’t find this to be much of a problem.
  • The small particles only rate a level three security. As stated, most confidential material stays safe and secure. But offices requiring the destruction of high risk data should use a higher security device, such as the GLHS930.
  • One feature lacking is different waste bins for paper and plastic waste, which would facilitate paper recycling. While this would be a nice benefit, many users won’t notice. If this is important to you, we suggest the Fellowes MS-450CS.

For high volume usage in a multi-user environment, the GLX1942 is a great system. It offers generous capacities combined with easy to use features for a convenient and efficient shredder. Your confidential material is quickly torn up in the cross cutting blades, leaving only tiny particles. And with one of the best warranties in the business, you can be sure you’re getting a quality machine. We think the GBC Shredmaster GLX1942 is an excellent choice for your next departmental shredder.
